RE:6/17/13 (07) Please tell me you are not that blind... I see no mention of "Labor Unions" in that quote. When Lincoln said "labor" he was referring to work, not some extortion society....

Well, parents, once again ellwood city school district failed to communicate with us about doing away with the security guards at each of the buildings. To not put the safety of our kids first is unbelievable! There is no other safety measure that they could put in place that would measure up to having a full time security guard at each building! I have no idea why this was all said and done without a word of communication to the parents!!

6/18/13 (03)
Shame on Ellwood City Council! There is a tremendous amount of support for reopening the Walnut Ridge School into a variety of businesses that would create jobs in this area and a place for kids to play ball. There is definitely something underhanded going on...we have local citizen wanting to bring something positive into Ellwood and you all are going to vote it down! I think legal action should be taken because the zoning was approved for the YMCA that was previously going to go into Walnut Ridge.

6/18/13 (04)
No security guards at each school building in the fall! Once again, the board sneaks something else in without letting parents know. Are they going to tell us how they are going to keep the kids safe then? Or are we just suppose to guess?

Well we had another weekend of yard sales.I wonder what the dognapping lowlife did for fun this time.Take an elderly women's car keys and record her panic.I wonder how he would enjoy it.If somebody sent his mother , wife, daughter into a panic. Then just for fun recorded it.

You don't need religion to have morals. If you can't determine right from wrong then you lack empathy, not relgion.

Congratulations to Riverside girls softball team for all of their success, BUT I think the Riverside coach made a mistake by not acknowledging that the winning team played well. Her whole interview was about all of the things HER team didn't do right and it made it look like the other team won by default. Be humble in victory, be gracious in defeat. That's what makes a great team...and a great coach.

Since my nephew works at Walmart I asked him about some of your assertions. As for child care, he said that he does not know of one person getting paid child care who works there. Ditto for SNAP. Why don't you address the people who do NOT WORK ANYWHERE and get everything free! The people who work at places like WALMART did not prepare themselves for the real world . Not everybody has an NBA. In life, we need professionals and we need laborers And while they are both valuable, a stock boy is not as valuable as a surgeon or a CEO. Time you got with the real world.

6/17/13 (01)
re: If you are working at Walmart, good for you, at least you have a job. Instead of bad-mouthing workers, why don't you address the scrots who are having children our od wedlock and collecting Welfare You foolishly made my point! It's people working at Walmart that get government assistance for health care, SNAP cards, and child care help. Why? Because Walmart pays them just enough for them to qualify for government assistance. That's the Walmart way---let the government pay their health care not Walmart. Thats the undeniable truth.

6/14/13 (08) I too would like to show my support for the Walnut Ridge project. How can borough council possibly justify not voting this through? To that one hater of labor unions: “Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.” -Abraham Lincoln

Congratulations to the Riverside Panthers softball team on their outstanding season. WPIAL championship and PIAA runner-up. Unfortunate way to end a season suffering their only loss int he state championship, but nonetheless, congratulations to these young ladies. We should be proud of our softball/baseball heritage in this area. Baseball and softball programs are very strong year over year. EC baseball wins WPIAL, Riverside baseball wins PIAA last year, Riverside softball wins WPIAL this year. Keep up the good work!!!! DYNASTY!

re: Since many people with drivers' licenses in our town do NOT know the vehicle code, please take a look at cars parked on the sidewalk of Crescent Avenue between Second and Fourth.

Another one is right across from the high school. Yep, two vehicles always parked on the sidewalk. What's hilarious is this offender has his own parking lot on the other side of his home/business.

How in the world can anyone state that they are upset over how one spends their salary, yes even tax payer provided salary on what they wish is beyond me... If a teacher supports a union that provided healthcare subsidies... why would you care? This is THEIR INCOME... Do you follow around your mailman/woman and pick at their groceries in the store? How about the Borough workers? Do you pick at them if they pay a kid to cut their grass? Don't blame the teachers for having programs cut...

6/14/13 (05)
If you are working at Walmart, good for you, at least you have a job. Instead of bad-mouthing workers, why don't you address the scrots who are having children our od wedlock and collecting Welfare, etc.?Besides, the $900,000 figure is just another union lie because Walmart employees do not want union thugs running the stores.

13 5 Politicians receive the biggest pensions in PA followed by teachers. And if you think I'm going to get mad at any state worker who actually SWEATS 8 hours a day and gets a pension which is pretty close to the private sector, hold your breath. Do you know any state road worker or clerk who gets to retire with the same benefits as teachers??? If you do please apprise all of us of them. You can try to defend those teacher pensions all you want, but most people will tell you those perks are indefensible. And if our students have to forego elementary music classes because so much money goes to pay for those retired teachers health care, that's just a sad commentary. Those perks should come to an end.

6/14/13 (08)
I too would like to show my support for the Walnut Ridge project. How can borough council possibly justify not voting this through? I was at the meeting and there was 100% support in a jammed pack room and hallway. The residents of Walnut Ridge area was not allowed to speak as the meeting was cut short. The owner of the building was also cut off before he was even able to finish about his plans. Some of these council members have waaayyy toooo much personal interest with other people involved and run their mouths. This one here is a no brainer. Lets talk dog parks and sand volleyball but vote out important things for our town. He needs to go also. Explain to me how adding recreation, jobs, businesses, money flow, taxes, and kids activities to a community is bad? And it is not costing the borough a dime. I know... because they didn't come up with it. Vote it through people. Our neighborhood is begging for it.

re: 06/11/13 (12) Animosity? Painted a terrible picture? I simply stated a truth in what I had observed for almost 15 years. It happened, I witnessed it! Before you start calling people names or try to paint a picture of what you think is the truth, ask some of the people who have worked at the B & W, the Tube Mill, Mathews Conveyor, etc., etc., etc. Hard to believe but it happened. By the way, state and federal workers and politicians get the same benefits. Are you complaining much about them?

6/13/13 (06)
Today’s big number! $900,000 $900,000 is the amount of money taxpayers spend on food stamps and other government aid programs to support underpaid workers at ONE Walmart in Wisconsin. There are almost 4,000 Walmart stores in the US. Walmart. Save money---live better* *unless you are a US taxpayer or work at Walmart.

6/13/13 (07)

Dear Mr. DeCarbo,
Since many people with drivers' licenses in our town do NOT know the vehicle code, please take a look at cars parked on the sidewalk of Crescent Avenue between Second and Fourth. A blue car is consistently parked in the intersection of Ninth and Border and there are cars and a trailer on the sidewalks of Border. Try driving these streets with opposing traffic or try to avoid a pedestrian walking in the street because a car blocks the sidewalk. This has gone on too long and the situations are ignored.

Our roads are tore up! 3rd St, Evans, and Pershing St to name a few. These gas and water companies come in a unearth a ditch to lay their new lines then do a half-ass job in filling in with asphalt. The asphalt then sinks and you have a wide gaully down one side of the road. When will the borough address finishing up the mess these gas and water companies couldnt finish!

6/11/13 (07) 6/10/13 (19) How could anybody stoop so low?? This past Friday I was at a local garage sale, and from a distance I witnessed a man carrying a small dog down the street and get into a car. Moments later, a woman came into the sale in a panic claiming someone took her dog. Several people went out to help search and all of a sudden this same man drove up with the dog in his car, all the while he appeared to be filming the whole episode on his cell phone. He evidently thought this would be quite amusing. I don't think the woman thought it was too funny.. If I were here I would press charges. What do you think? Is dognapping the same as kidnapping?

6/11/13 (13) Are you trying to tell me that the $100 dollars a month that teachers receive to help pay for their health care comes from the Pennsylvania State Education Assn???? If that is true, the taxpayers still paid for it if it came out of your union dues. The money from your union dues is what influenced the politicians to give you that $100 a month from the taxpayers. But I don't think that $100 a month comes from the PSEA, But I will find out where it comes from. And please don't act like the taxpayers didn't pay for that money, the taxpayers pay for every penny you receive.

6/12/13 (14)
11/13 (13) What kind of logic does it take to try to tell us that the union dues that are used to go into health care subsidies is not taxpayer money? What do they pay their union dues with? From their salary, provided by TAXPAYERS.

6/12/13 (15)
I know this is a little late, but better late than never! The same person who employs over 100 people (mostly Ellwoodians) at his company in Ellwood and, from what I understand, is continuing to expand his company, withdrew his offer from the Apple building in Ellport because Council wasn't impressed with his down payment? I understand Council is trying to "protect the borough" but WOW. That guy has every right to take his business out of Ellwood City and never look back. Shouldn't Council be doing everything they can to keep existing businesses in town?

RE: 6/10/13 (12) Clearly your world is Ellwood City and its immediate surrounding communities. You will have to excuse me I work for a fortune 50 company with offices all over the world. I daily communicate with people from India, China, Sri Lanka, Scotland, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Australia. Communicating with people with varying command over the English language and still needing to communicate effectively makes one realize that the exact position of the letters, the proper word, or a period in the right place, although nice, is not necessary for effective communication in a conversation. I agree with you when it comes to anyone who grew up in the US and simply neglected to learn should try to do better. My point is, this is the internet. There is no easy way to tell who is posting. There are far more people in this country and in the area who did not grow up here. They may just be learning the language. There are also people with legitimate mental and learning disabilities (proved by many of the arguments) who post here. You cannot assume that every post is from a Lincoln High grad. who is just "lazy." Even if that grammar or spelling mistake was because of laziness, please explain exactly how that affects the thoughts? Most of the time when spelling or grammar comes up it is about one or two words. It is simply because the person bringing it up is just trying to make someone look foolish. It has nothing to do with the actual debate topic. It is a childish "got ya" argument. If a post is virtually illegible, then I agree, try harder.

6/11/13 (12)
6/10/13 (11) I don't think that explaining teachers pension benefits is bashing, that's public knowledge. But you really painted a terrible picture of mill workers and your animosity was poorly disguised. No one said teachers are doing a bad job, only that we taxpayers have a hard time paying their pension benefits and that the elementary students will be without a music teacher next school year because so much of the budget goes to pay for health benefits for retired teachers. If having your pay and benefits exposed to the public is taking such a toll on you, maybe it's time to return to the private sector. I hear that mill in Koppel is hiring. You will have to pass a drug test though, good luck. By the way, Ellwood City is not unique in questioning how much of our tax dollars go to fund those liberal teacher pensions. Anyone you talk to has the same complaint, they don't mind paying teachers good salaries while they are working, BUT they don't want to support them like that for the rest of their lives.

6/11/13 (13)
6/10/13 (08) How long have retired teachers been getting $100 a month to help pay for their health care? Does anyone else know about this?? And people on this post are worrying about SOCIALISM for the poor????
____________
The one hundred dollars come from the union dues that a teacher paid all of their years working. It goes to the school district every month towards health care. Tax payers do not pay it.

6/11/13 (14)
6/10/13 (12) I agree with you completely. We never should stop learning or trying to do our best. My thanks to the excellent teachers I have had. Becoming too lazy to write as someone attempted to teach you over and over, only shows your laziness. And yes, foreign students do care more about language and education than Americans do. What a shame.

6/11/13 (15)
Hey, would you look at that; an Ellwood resident recognizes a need and an opportunity to help the community and spur business growth. I hope the Walnut Ridge revitalization is a sucess. My one concern, and it has always been, is the dangerous roadway that snakes up and around the school. It is well trafficked but the left-to-right-to-left wind of the road makes for some close traffic WITHOUT sidewalks!

6/11/13 (16)

6/7/13 (1) You took a whole paragraph to explain that because YOU climbed out of poverty, everyone should be able to do it. Margaret Thatcher should have told the oil companies, the agribusinesses, the mining companies, and every other wealthy business that receives subsidies, that someday the money won't be there. Just who made you a shill for the rich, spewing out their "hate the poor, they are ruining our country" diatribes?

6/10/13 (10)

6/10/13 (11)
For all the Ellwood City teacher bashers: You are unlike most communities in the United States who appreciate their teachers for what they do and the differences they make in children's lives. I have had the opportunity to experience both sides of the coin, working in the schools and working in industry. I have seen workers in industry hide in their secret spots and sleep all night. I have seen workers sabotage machines so they can have a break. I have seen workers take lunch breaks that lasted for more than and hour and a half. I have seen union workers tell their bosses to call someone else out because what they were being asked to do wasn't in their job descriptions. I have seen workers slow to a crawl because they had some sort of gripe against the company. I have even seen workers punch in leave, and then return to their job to punch out. How about the workers who fudge on their time cards and collect overtime pay? How much is this type of behavior costing us the consumer, to pay in the end? I have never seen any of this in the schools! As a matter of fact, I have seen most teachers go above and beyond what they are asked of in time spent and in money spent for their students.

6/10/13 (12)
In my educational experience, it was “drummed” into me by my teachers at Lincoln High, that the use of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation is important when presenting public papers. To do anything less was to open you to criticism and ridicule as being uneducated and lacking in the ability to properly express yourself. In today’s electronic age, the excuse “I don’t have time.” Or “I don’t really care." is a cop out for simply being lazy and sloppy. I ask, how long does it take to type in your thoughts in a word processing program and do a grammar and spell check and then a cut-paste. Granted, with the complexities of the English Language, you still have to proof read you presentation just to make sure you have used the proper words. My home has been open the past ten years to foreign exchange students from all over the world and they strived for perfection in their use of the English language when preparing their class assignments. Frequently, I have to review letters of application and job resumes. You would be shocked at the errors I come across. I have even received letters of application, done in the texting shorthand used by the teenagers when communicating by cell-phone with their friends. Since our business requires detailed reports and depositions, many of these young people and even older adults are passed over when their introductory paperwork is rife with errors. The excuses I’ve read on this site, simply won't cut it in the real world. A wise man once told me that any job you are given should be done to the best of your ability and with pride. Do it right the first time! Thanks Dad! Capt. J. Miller

RE:6/5/13 (10) Please... I was born poor, very poor. There were days that I was not sure where my next meal would come from. I grew up on welfare and social security because my father passed away young and my mother had no job skills and three kids to raise. She never remarried. Today, I have a decent job, a family of my own, 3 cars, a motorcycle, I own my home, and live relatively comfortably. Befor you go there, I do not tell you this because I am bragging, or for your sympathy or anything like that. I tell you this as an example. It is up to the individual to make their own life. It took nearly 25 years of struggling to get where I am not and often it seemed I would never get there. The key is to keep going. Don't fall for the easy way out. It is a trap. Personal responsibility is the only thing that will get anyone out of poverty. You have never hear of someone getting ahead because they are on welfare, welfare should only be a bridge to get people through rough times. Unfortunatley too many people see it as a way of life. Once people are giving you things, many fall into the trap thinking they are entitled to more and more. I am very concerned! I heard a rumor that the Ellwood City School District was not having a security guard at each building next school year. The district had better not cut back on this issue. The safety of our students should be the first priority of the district!

RE: Spell Checking Nonsense For some reason the moderator decided that my response to all of this spelling/grammar nonsense needed to be deleted, so lets try again. I find it hilarious that someone would waste their time correcting spelling/grammar on a posting board. These are not term papers or even as formal as a proper letter. I appreciate good punctuation and grammar as much as the next person because it makes reading easier. My point is that for you to dismiss someone's argument on a matter because they have difficulty spelling or using proper grammar is a cop out. How do you know if that person is an immigrant who is just learning the language? We are all descendants of someone who moved to this country and had to learn the language. How would your grandfather or grandmother feel if their points were dismissed simply because they have not mastered the language. How do you know that the person making the post does not have a legitimate learning disability? If it is a matter of improper education, how do you know that person is not trying to better themselves? For you to suggest that they are merely because someone doesn't care assumes alot and you know what they say about assuming... Spelling and grammar mistakes are not always the result of "laziness or casual attitude." Even if they are, you are posting in a casual setting. Posting boards are like conversations. People use slang! We are not turning in an assignment in a classroom, there is no teacher, boss, or other authority here other than the moderator. If they would like to spell check all of the posts, then by all means. It is their sandbox. My point with the whole spelling/grammar issue is that anyone who has to resort to it in a debate is clearly losing or has already lost the debate. Checking someone's grammar on a posting board is like a debate team claiming victory because someone used a slang term on the other side. What a joke... think about how many peoples’ opinions you have “dismissed” simply because you are too arrogant to listen to their words and not hear their thoughts. You may think you are highly educated, but dare I say, you are not putting it to good use.

Just wondering if the money this district spends to provide health care to retired teachers would be better spent on an elementary music teacher. HA! Like as if YOU would forfeit your health insurance! You’d be better off finding out how much is wasted from the school district budget in lining the pockets of the cyber school scam.

Walmart is giving him special training and in a year he will be a salaried worker. Terrific! Then as a salaried worker he will be eligible to put in 60-70 hours/week AT THE SAME RATE! You forgot to tell us about that sign in the emploee lunch room: "ALWAYS the lowest wages".

Conservatives say if you don’t give the rich more money, the will lose their incentives to invest. As for the poor, they tell us they’ve lost all incentive because we’ve given them too much money. Funny how you’re able to brainwash people when you’re the one with all the money.

Not true. You make it sound like they teach eight hours a day. It's not even close. Even on a full day of instruction, they might be responsible for teaching for 5.5 hours. And coaching is separate from teaching. Of course it takes more time, but they get paid more to do it. Coaching isn't part of their contract.

After reading about the pedestrian being struck downtown, and seeing a report about how some cities are making millions on speeders and red light runners using cameras, it occurred to me that this town could solve two problems at once. Place cameras at some strategic locations. Fifth and Lawrence comes to mind, they speed through the red lights going east and west on Lawrence and they run the red light on Fifth street because it is green only a fraction of the time that travelers on Lawrence Ave. have green lights. The end of the Fifth st. bridge comes to mind, with people flying on the bridge and many running the red light. Lawrence Ave has the most speeders due to the red light sequence. All the lights turn green at the same time, people at 5th are speeding to make the light at 9th and vice versa. You HAVE to be speeding to cover those 4 blocks before the light turns red. And the wampum Ave speeders could provide the borough with some revenue, along with Fountain and Line Avenues. Go to it council, you might make some money to fix our rotten roads, they are to be ashamed of.

6/7/13 (10)
6/6/13 (8) I think if the teachers worked 8 hours a day, they would want overtime. I understand their contract stipulates a SEVEN and a HALF HOUR DAY. You can probably call the school if you doubt me. Or you could ask a local teacher.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank each and every member and the member's family's of the R.W. Welsh girls softball team for their prayers, love and support they've shown for my daughter Stacy Dismuke and granddaughters Jenica and Alyssa Dismuke during the passing of a great family friend Eric Allwine this week. I would also like to thank Jean Coccia and True Value Hardware for their compassion and understanding. My head coach Scot Dennis said,What started out as a new softball team three years ago, ended up as a family. And I myself, couldn't ask for a better family! Thank you everybody for your love and support. Randy Welsh.

To: 6/5/13 (08) You said: "select the ‘normal’ or ‘standard’ picture setting on your TV" ... it there some kind of difference? No, I'm serious. I'm assuming there must be for you to say it, so I'm curious. Lol, now I'm going to have to look at my TV and see what difference it makes in the picture. But I want to know what difference it makes with regard to your statement. Thanks.

Lol, I came to catch up on several weeks of reading ... done. You know how something triggers a memory out of the blue? There was something about honking a horn, and although this has nothing to do with that comment, it brought back to mind a happening several decades ago. My car had stalled in an intersection. As I'm trying to restart it, a man behind me started honking his horn. I'm turning the key, and also most likely "flooding" it, and he's honking now in longer blasts. Frustrated, I got out of my car and walked to the man in his car behind me and said, "Tell you what; how about I honk your horn and you start my car?" Well, the honking stopped and my car started, lol. Coincidence, yes, but humorous nevertheless.

Think about it, if you are not benefitting from those payoffs yourself in some way, you would think that the kids education is waaay more important. BTW every retired PA. teacher already gets $100 a month from the state to help retirees buy health insurance, if that will help you make your decision. Almost a no-brainer now, huh? We'll soon know if the EC school board sees it your way or mine. And I'll bet that every school district that offers retirement incentives has a secret.

It's been awhile since I have been down to the park and at the Kid's Created Kingdom. Today I was down there with a few children I was babysitting. WHAT A DISAPOINTMENT! Doesn't the city have any money to fix up all the broken things there? There are several broken swings and other things that now have loose chains just hanging which I saw kids grabbing a hold of and swinging them around... an accident ready to happen if you ask me! There use to be a thing with chimes in the Tot Lot.. thats gone... New mulch was spread around but that's about all that has been done.

RE:6/5/13 (08) Clearly the fact that you are looking for an argument made you completely miss the point. They are telling you this are the things you should do to stop global warming.... I am infact very frugal, but not because of global warming. I do it because I feel it is right for me. Others may not and I have no problem with that. The problem is that people like you believe that the collective has the right to tell anyone how they should live. I on the other hand do not. If you think your whites come cleaner in hot water and you have not problem paying for it then by all means do it. It will not change the "global warming" (the thing most people know as "the weather") one iota!

Walmart pays more than minimum wage and refuses to unionize so workers can take 12 coffee breaks a day. My nephew works in a Walmart, loves it and got 2 promotions in 9 months. If you do not have a formal education it is a great place to work. You sound like a union thug. • When you say “…do not have a formal education” you refute yourself. • “2 promotions in 9 months”? Was that from a shopping cart off the lot attendant to shelf stocker? I’m tired of my tax money paying for your nephew’s subsidized food stamps and health care. Come back after your nephew gets his GED. Meanwhile, my nephew who does have a college degree is earning tons more than your nephew can ever comprehend and he is paying for his own health care.

I would like to ask the Ellwood City Police Department to start patroling the streets sorrounding the ball fields. Last week my aunt had a spell and passed out. The paramedics could not get up the road to help her. They had to park a block away and walk up. Can you imagine having no idea how serious your loved ones condition may or may not be then seeing the very people who know how to help can't get to them because the road is blocked? It was horrible and I hope no one else ever has to feel that way.

So, the 3 year old that was life flighted to Children’s Hospital last week from the accident on the Portersville road has to have some neurosurgery. That’s the kid who was not secured in the child seat. Well anyway, according to WPXI, the police found heroin hidden in the 3 year olds diaper. Who do you think is going to pay for the negligence of not securing the child in the car seat? Who do you think paid for the helicopter ride to Children’s Hospital? Who do you think is going to pay for all the neuro surgery? The answer is all of us that have insurance; not the heroin using father. All this from someone with a last name associated as being a pillar of the Ellwood City community.

6/3/13 (01) I find it totally hilarious that so many would respond in an adverse manner to my post regarding the poor grammar, spelling and punctuation I have found in several postings.
------------------------------------------
I found your comment, as I read it, spot on. I dislike the causal attitude, in all manner of life in America. From dress by students and teachers alike, to the causal dress of people in the retail work place and my most disliked part, the speech of young people who can't speak with swearing with very foul language. Believe me I'm no highly educated person, as you are, just a person making an observation. People, especially younger folks, need to have more pride in all aspects of their lives. That said, I must say to you, your pride in what you have done with your life is commendable, but it brings out your inflated ego when you write about it. Your words show us you're educated and the people closest to you know of who you are and what you're made of. That should be enough. To then blow your own horn is, for lack of other words, "unneeded and over the top." Keep that ego in check. Ego is a wonderful thing, when kept in check. Congratulation on your earned success. Just an opinion by a reader.

6/4/13 (06)
6/3/13 (1) Thank you for your comments, I agree with you wholeheartedly. People don't seem to realize that their arguments, or thoughts on issues, lose all credibility when they can't even write them down without egregious spelling and grammar errors. Your words take on a new dimension when they are misspelled, misplaced or misdirected. Is it the end of the world? NO, it just makes people wonder about your intelligence, that's all.

As a retired teacher with 35 years of service in the Public Schools, I would love to be receiving the percentages you are quoting in your writings. However, your information is flawed and the reality is as I quoted. I do agree with you that offering a severance package with ten years of health insurance to get a teacher to retire early is flawed thinking on behalf of the school boards. If you do the math, there is a savings to the board to do so, but the question arises; Is that the most economical way to proceed. As far as I am concerned, the debate is over

I’m tired of paying for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I’m tired of paying the salary of a Supreme Court justice who has a vested interest in the success of Monsanto.
I’m tired of paying for the health care of Walmart workers because Walmart won’t pay its employees a living wage or provide insurance.
I’m tired of paying Israel $8 million a day.
I’m tired of paying the oil industry $22 million a day.
And I’m really tired of hearing all the problems in the country being blamed on people who are struggling to make I through one more day, the vast majority of whom are themselves tired of being on welfare and would give anything to be self-sufficient.

RE:5/31/13 (10) According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, in the retail sector overall only 45 percent of workers receive health coverage from their own employer. Wal-Mart covers 48 percent of its employees. Still, why do more than half of Wal-Mart’s employees opt out of the company’s health insurance? Many employees opt out because they are otherwise covered. The company says that two-thirds of its employees are second-income providers, college students, and senior citizens. Many of these have health insurance through their spouse’s employer, parent’s plan, or retirement and Medicare programs. Thus about 40 percent of the company’s workers are covered apart from Wal-Mart’s plan. Even if you work part time at Wal-mart you are eligable for health insurance benefits after two years.

6/3/13 (06)
5/31/13 (2) No, you do some home work. It has become clear that you benefit from some or all of the teachers benefits and have no interest in changing the pension system to something that is fairer to the taxpayer, instead of giving lopsided treatment to the public employees. Anyone who is happy with the present system is someone who is benefitting from it. Do you know anyone who works for a living who gets 75% of their final average salary as a pension after only 30 years of employment? Or 87.5% after 35 years? Plus paid health care, and other perks. It's nice work if you can get it, but most of the taxpayers who support these princely pensions will NEVER come close to those kinds of benefits. If you still think you can argue that these pension benefits are good for the taxpayers, well, good luck with that. And BTW, don't be so condescending, it does little to enhance the debate, and it makes you sound callous and arrogant.

An editorial in the N.C News over the weekend called for changes in the public school employee and state public employee pension plans. It seems that they are $47 BILLION short of being funded. It's the equivalent of every household in PA owing $9,000 to fully fund the pension plan. Anyone good with that? If our state government doesn't act, we will all owe $13,000 per household in 2018. Anyone good with that? And those perks those teachers get as they walk out the door????? Yes, we pay for those too. I think educators should be well paid when they are working, but we cannot afford to support them in that lifestyle for the rest of their natural days. Not when many who are supporting that lifestyle are struggling to make ends meet. Give the taxpayers a break for a change. Instead of perks for the teachers, give our music department that teacher that we can't seem to afford.

5/30/13 (13) 5/28/13 (16) How does enticing senior teachers to retire by providing them with benefits, help a school district? They then have to hire a new teacher at a lower salary but with the same exact benefits the retired teacher is also collecting, and that new teacher starts to acquire pension benefits also. The retired teacher is getting a pension that is close to 90% of his/her last salary and the school district is providing all of the same benefits. You seem to think that putting a teacher out to pension cuts your costs, but YOU are still providing all of the tax dollars for that pension. When you provide incentives for teachers to retire early and then replace them with new teachers, you are now paying for TWO (2) teachers, one of whom from which you receive no benefits. No wonder we keep paying more in taxes for teachers pensions every year Perhaps you misread my post. Obviously you have never looked into what a teachers retirement incentive package consists of. Do some homework, then we can talk.

Hats off to the Ellwood City Police Department, Officer McBride and Jozek for the recent drug bust. All I can say is they sure got a good one when they got Jozek! His nose must be incredible to hit on the heroin covered in duct tape and grease. Maybe Jozek will develop such a reputation that drug traffickers will not dare going through or to Ellwood City!

Be aware of the council, they are planning to go through with the riverboat project. I think it is so silly that they would even consider spending 1.1 million dollars on a boat with no water. I know it worked in hermitage but where we gonna get the geologist and time to put this boat in the ground? yeah you heard me the second time, tax payers, yep OUR MONEY. The restaurant portion is silly, who wants seafood in a steel-beef eating town. These people are out of their tree! I can't believe how much of an issue this is for us as a non-boat loving community. my neighbor had a boat and hated and he loves the fact we are buying a boat and docking it on land for tourism. GEEZ and the boat lets people buy novelty shirt with access card!

5/30/13 (04) i think where the bible talks about 2 or 3 gathering together in his name he wasnt speaking about public prayer. that then would be a contradiction to Jesus telling us that when we pray to go to a private place. the pharisees was the ones who liked to pray in public. speaking of the 2 or 3 gathered in his name was him telling us that his presence is with us no matter if theres 2 or 1000 !!

5/30/13 (14) The Pennsylvania school board assn. has no information on their website regarding teacher's pension benefits. Try pulling that BS on someone else. There are currently almost 200,000 retired school employees, almost 300,000 still working. Two people retired, 3 people working out of every five is hard to pay for, don't you think? Do you think that all of those teachers retiring early may have something to do with that unfitting ratio. School districts get little to no benefit by offering early retirement incentives. Their payrolls decrease slightly, but their pension costs rise and create the problems these public pension plans are struggling with now. Who else gets to retire early without fear of rising health care costs, with paid life insurance to boot, and while the public employees talk about the payroll contributions they make, well, every worker pays into their own pension plan, usually by getting a lower wage or other reduced benefits. And yes, I'm so liberal the trees hug me, in case your interested, but this town can no longer afford these princely salaries and benefits. And I fear that so many school board members have relatives working in the district, that nothing will change.

Reg: 5/30/13/(1) I agree with you. It is so sad the kids have no respect for themselves. What happened? I really blame some of this on computers and video games. They sit to much and do not receive enough socialization and exercise. It is time for health reason and mental stimulation that the kids need to be limited and just get outside and enjoy life without the gadets. I watched one day the kids walking from school and the weight problem is really serious. Parents wake up and be firm. It is called tough love, but it is also saving your child from Diabetes and serious health issues.

We have very strong baseball programs in our backyards and we need to be proud and support these programs! Youth programs all the way through high school, three cheers for all the coaches and volunteers who gave their time to help these programs excel. Congratulations to Riverside softball. Let’s go for back-to-back PIAA state titles for baseball/softball!

In reply to the post about dress code at Lincoln...yes there is a dress code and the for the most part I think it is under control, but, once the weather turns warm the sluty clothes come out, the less the better. And your right, the boys do look homeless, just more of the "I don't care attitude" which is out of control. At least they are covered!

RE:5/29/13 (07) Christianity believes that if you have never had the opportunity to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then you can enter the kingdom by good deeds alone because those deeds constitute a knowledge and acceptance of God: "The truth about God is known to them instinctively. God has put this knowledge in their hearts. From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God" (Romans 1:19-20, New Living Translation). If he is referring to those who reject Jesus, then he is on shakey ground. The statement would have to be put into context.

RE: 5/28/13 #3 I've come to the conclusion that you either cannot read and comprehend what was written and you also chose not to go to the website mentioned and read the full summary as presented on the Pennsylvania State School Board Association's website. Or, you simply want to argue a moot point. Or are you one of the under educated miss-informed followers of our current Left-Wing Democrat Incumbents? Read the article and then do the math. There are cut-off points and maximums in the teacher retirement system. Regarding the severance packages; Those are up to the individual school boards. Most teachers start their careers at ages 21/22. If they retire after thirty year's service, they would most likely be 51//52 and not eligible for Medicare benefits under the present guidelines. So, it seems that the incentive of offering them ten years of health insurance coverage is there to offset the ten years of no health insurance and encourage them to retire early so the district can save money. As for the annual cost of living adjustment. If they have that. Good for them. I am certain that if you had a similar retirement system you would not be complaining. Keep in mind that we each choose our careers and that we have the opportunity to offset our retirement funds with 401 K's and IRA's as well as investing on our own. If you don't like the way the government is handling things, run for office. Better yet, don't we have enough problems with our state and Federal legislators now.

RE: 5/28/13 (11) As I said before, there is a HUGE difference between those who have fallen on hard times, and those who live there purposely. I've been laid off and had to get govt assistance. I pay taxes so that if something happens to me, the assistance will be there. I don't have an issue with that. What I have an issue with is when someone lives on Welfare, never pays taxes, and multiplies at my expense.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that a 77 year old part-time resident was hired to be a playground instructor. With all of the local high school students and college students who need work, EC council hired a retired educator, the same person they hire every year for a summer sinecure in Ewing Park, who obviously is related to someone in EC who has the gravitas to hire this NON-RESIDENT every year in a gravy job. It is a shame when a person with a big state pension comes to this town every summer and takes a job that one of our students could take.

re: www.dpw.state.pa.us 1-800-932-0582 (c-oimdhc@pa.gov) what else do you need to know? Didn't believe me?
-------------
You're a flea flicker over a pack of smokes. Why don't you be a REAL hero? State and local corporate welfare costs an average family of four $940 per year in higher taxes and/or reduced government services. Other corporate tax breaks, such as explicit waivers of income, sales, excise, utility, fuel and other taxes for favored corporations. Other state and local governments allow companies to defer tax payments, often for twenty years or more, essentially interest-free loans to businesses by taxpayers. If the company declares bankruptcy, the deferred taxes may be settled for pennies on the dollar or never recovered at all. Add accounting tricks – such as a franchise in one state passing its revenue to a holding company in a state with low or no corporate taxes and getting the money back as a loan – and many corporations pay no state taxes. Professional sports franchises often negotiate such deals when they threaten to leave town. Did you know the NFL, NBA, NHL etc are all TAX EXEMPT? So my advise to you is to keep flicking those fleas.

5/29/13 (15)
I want to thank Councilwomen Marilyn Mancini and Judy Dici, and Councilmen George Celli and Brad Ovial for attending the Memorial Day services. as a former serviceman who lost many buddies overseas, I appreciate the recognition. I have instilled in my family the virtue of appreciation and respect.

5/29/13 (16)
Reg: 5/28/13/(15) I totally agree with you. Taking GOD out of our lives will be the ruin of the country. Ask yourself why is there no morals, all the killings (esp. with the young) mixed marriages, unwed Mothers, no respect for teachers and some of the action of teachers, sexual abuse all goes back to taking religion out of our lives. Nobody does anything to stop they let it happen. People use to have respect for themself and others and that is gone. I remember the day you had an argument with somebody you would have a good old fist fight and friends the next day. But today when there is an argument out comes the guns and they do not live long enough to be friends again. We do not have to worry about the world coming to an end. We are doing it ourselves.

5/29/13 (17)
While you were busy witching about the gal who bought a Snickers with her food stamps, EXXON pocketed $9000 of you tax dollars.

5/28/13 (01)
You know, there might be some misunderstanding by a lot of people when they see someone using an "Access" Card. People receiving public assistance can get one or two kinds of assistance for which they use their access cards. One type is the traditional "foodstamps" and the other is outright "cash assistance". The cash assistance part can be used like cash period, for whatever they want to purchase. Not everyone qualifies for the "cash assistance" part. Maybe that is why some Access Cards users are seen using their cards for cigarettes and things we all seem to like to stare at and monitor. Maybe they are not violating foodstamp rules, but rather just spending their cash assistance. I hope this lets a lot of people sleep easier at night now.

5/28/13 (02)
5/24/13 (05) RE: 5/22/13 (05) That's what I thought - I have spoken to the EC police since then and they will take care of it. She made one purchase to buy a drink and then a second purchase for cigs - and said to the owner "I have cash left on my card"...not sure what that means That entire post is a bunch of horse manure. You must be making this up as you go along. To clear it for anyone confused by your post of lies: A police officer does not want bother with nor are they allowed to "take care of it", it is a matter for the Department of Welfare. They have their own investigators who are well compensated to look into such accusations.

5/28/13 (04)
5/24/13 (12) 5/21/13 (15) So you're saying that any teacher who works to age 60 with a minimum of 30 years qualifies for a full retirement? A full retirement being the salary they made when they retired? I know you get a 2.5% credit for every year you teach, 30 years gets you 75% of your final salary, 35 years gets a full 87.5% of your salary as a pension for the rest of your life. And they say they get 10 years of health benefits from the taxpayers, too. Do you know anyone else who can do that? Anyone???? **You didn't even touch on the incentive packages they are offered. You cannot believe how well a teacher makes out with the incentive package... Especially when the school is wanting to clean house!

5/28/13 (05)
I don't want to get into a debate but I can set the record straight. Someone may get both food stamps and cash assistance. The cash assistance is loaded onto the same card but can be used for anything. While I understand the frustration of watching someone use it to buy cigarettes, they are within their legal rights to do so. I am 100% sure of this information, I used to work with those applying for SSDI and many of my clients were on government assistance. And no, DPW is NEVER going to pick up the phone and when they do, they will be nasty. It's because they're criminally understaffed and overworked. Imagine what they put up with on a daily basis. So please stop calling the police for these issues. The only illegal thing would be to accept foodstamps for cigarettes which I am sure is physically impossible on the machines used.

5/28/13 (06)
Re: 5/24/13 (05)"cash left on card" That means this person gets a cash assistance and that cash can be used to purchase anything CASH is required for, even if YOU don't like what the cash is spent on.

5/28/13 (07)
To 5/24/13 (06) re: now you're embarrassed! Lol, nah, Dude or Dudette. But nice try on attempting and failing to make anyone who gives a different view than yours feel like less than you. Do ya feel better now? :)

Doesn't anyone get married before child, anymore? Oh that's right - single mom gets a free ride on the coat tails of the working men/women. You wouldn't believe how many COA's I pass out to new mom's even though they share the home with the babies daddy. GET A JOB!

5/28/13 (11)
Oh, you people who use access and snap cards, you are not looking poor enough to suit those watchful eyes of the overly righteous. How can those prigs feel superior if you keep flaunting your cards? You are just not playing the role of the poor unwed mother who works two jobs and still qualifies for help, to the correct degree of poverty for those prudes. Maybe they would feel better if you resorted to begging while in the store you patronize, then they could give you a dime and feel real holy. You have to learn how to play the poverty part, don't act like you are as good as them, they resent that and it makes them write mean things on this page. Someday, bad fortune may visit them and they will feel your pain.

5/28/13 (12)
5/14/13 (16) I'm so happy that you have found some merit in the French socialist government. Mothers get paid to have children, get ONE YEAR PAID to start child on right path, Fathers also get time off. Every worker gets 4 weeks vacation each year, and children are respected and watched closely. If W. Bush hadn't ruined our economy and way of life we would have much lower rates of poverty and homelessness. I could go for a while on this topic, but you get the idea.

5/28/13 (16)
Re:#14 I suggest you read what I wrote a second time. My information comes from the PA State School Board Association's Website. I don't see anything there that states that a teacher can retire and receive a retirement benefit of 100% of their salary. The website gives you the breakdown. Regarding a retired teacher receiving full health benefits as a perk if they retire early; That is up to the local school districts. I would assume that that benefit is offered to encourage the teacher to retire early so the district can save by hiring a teacher at salary step 1 vs paying an experienced teacher with a Master's Degree with more experience.

5/28/13 (17)
Well, it's that time of year, pot holes to fill, many at that, hmmm, i can't put my foot down on it, but has there been any events at the "new" Lawrence Ave. stage? What are they waiting for? Also, would like to say something to all you ellwood city residence. You residence, @ 6 to 7000 are not going to get any answers to anything if you don't attend councel meetings. Oh, and as for the festival, why don't they put some big local names for musical entertainment? And the sub sale at WPFD, they are trying to do what they do every year.,raise money. So my advise, you live in a small community, and accept it. You have to understand, Ellwood city has a yearly budge, as do the surrounding TWP's, and Boros, Big ideas with a small amount of money won't buy you Disney World, the Epcot Center, Six Flags. I can go on and on and on and on. Would though, like to see a Walmart here. That of course, won't ever happen while im alive, neither will all the seniors. that would promote revenue being put back into the city we live in. But, i'm like all the rest of you folks. Complaining isn't the answer. As i have stated before, money talks, b---sh-- walks.

So, there was another accident at the Portersville/Wurtemburg road intersection.
Q. Where do you think they were stopping traffic?
A. About 50 feet from the scene. Yup, that’s right. Everyone was forced to turn around in the church parking lot. While returning back to Rt 65, I counted 26 cars in line waiting to do the same thing. I guess it was too much to expect someone redirecting traffic at THE OTHER END of the Wurtemburg cutoff at Rt 65.
Q. What else was going on while he was waving the flag?
A. He was texting

I had company over the Memorial day and we visited a patient at the hospital. The party was totally amazed how clean the hospital was as soon as you walked in the doors. The staff was all so friendly and could not do enough for us. She said we should be so proud to have such a hospital coming from New York the hospital are not clean and you would be lucky to find a nurse to help. I think some time we take for granted what we have until a stranger sees it from different eyes. Be proud of your hospital and thanks for the great care.

5/28/13 (21)
Isn’t it something that someone who thinks they’re a stalwart of Ellwood habitually parks their two vehicles on the sidewalk across from the school! Especially when they got their own parking lot. Such arrogance!

Why are you on food stamps if you work two jobs? Better yet, if you can't afford the basics, why would you have a child?
1. I work 30 hours at my first job at minimum wage in which my take home pay is $167 after taxes. Yes, I pay taxes. I could work 40 hours but they don’t want to provide any benefits.
2. I work 15 hours at my second job again at minimum wage in which my take home pay is $83 after taxes. Yes, I pay taxes on my second job also.
3. My combined two jobs results in take home pay of $250 per week. To break the poverty level, I would need to earn $365 per week. I guess a $2.85/hour raise would put Walmart in the red.
4. You ask, “Why would I have a child?” Would you prefer I aborted? I love my children very much and take your question as an insult. Have you never made a mistake in your life?
Perhaps you can use your time to track down my deadbeat husband who doesn’t pay child support and who skipped out on us for a younger bimbo.

5/24/13 (03)
I have to shake my head and smile every time I hear someone say (5/23/13 (16)"why would you have a child?"
Sure, there are some people who continue to have children to stay in the system, but I have a couple grandkids that were conceived while 'Mom' was on birth control pills. I myself have an adult child conceived while using birth control AND an IUD.
Yeah, sometimes there is an ulterior motive to getting pregnant ... and sometimes it just works that way.

I almost choked on my waffle this morning when I read Ralph Chiappetta's letter to the editor! So,Council members want to help teens, huh. Well, why is it that council woman Dici is the only council member to, with a group of teens, go to different playgrounds, clean up and paint on Saturday mornings? They all can't be working weekends!

Several people on here have made the effort to inform you of how school district's budgets are being depleted by your Federal and State governments to pay for things they were never intended to. Pointing fingers at each other instead of coming together to stop this is just what they knew you would do while they continue to pilfer your schools budget. There is enough money to pay for sports, band, music etc. it's just not being used where it needs to be. Snap out of it people! The ship is half way under water, there's no room for immature nonsense. It's time to use the brain that God gave you and look at the big picture. Don't be so predictable and easy to play by your politicians, Besides it would set a good example for your children to avoid becoming gullible finger pointers.

5/21/13 (15) So you're saying that any teacher who works to age 60 with a minimum of 30 years qualifies for a full retirement? A full retirement being the salary they made when they retired? I know you get a 2.5% credit for every year you teach, 30 years gets you 75% of your final salary, 35 years gets a full 87.5% of your salary as a pension for the rest of your life. And they say they get 10 years of health benefits from the taxpayers, too. Do you know anyone else who can do that? Anyone???? I don't mind that we pay them a decent salary, but the pension costs are more than we can bear. I knew a retired teacher who always bragged about the cost of living increases she received on her pension. How many folks do you know who even get a pension and benefits like that? If your argument is that teachers pensions are not that great, you're barking up the wrong tree... at the wrong taxpayer.

I wish they would watch Lawrence Ave. like they watch 4th St. The lights are coordinated to the point that motorists are flying up and down the Avenue in an effort to make all the lights when they are green, and they all turn green at the same time. Don't try to cross Main St. while that race is going on, maybe they should put some of those crosswalk alerts on that raceway.

In the United States, at least 9% of school-aged children have been diagnosed with ADHD, and are taking medications. In France, the percentage of kids diagnosed and medicated for ADHD is less than point 5%.

French child psychiatrists, on the other hand, view ADHD as a medical condition that has psycho-social and situational causes. French doctors prefer to look for the underlying issue that is causing the child distress—not in the child's brain but in the child's social context. They then choose to treat the underlying social context problem with family counseling.

From the time their children are born, French parents provide them with a firm cadre—the word means "frame" or "structure." Children are not allowed to snack whenever they want. Mealtimes are at four specific times of the day. French children learn to wait patiently for meals, rather than eating snack foods whenever they feel like it. French babies, too, are expected to conform to limits set by parents.

Consistently enforced limits, in the French view, make children feel safe and secure. Clear limits, they believe, actually make a child feel happier and safer.

It makes perfect sense that French children don't need medications because they learn self-control early in their lives. The children grow up in families in which the rules are well-understood, and a clear family hierarchy is firmly in place. In French families parents are firmly in charge of their kids—instead of the American family style, in which the situation is all too often vice versa.

The numbers don't lie.

How pointless are the detour signs for RT-65 that are barely visible and angled poorly at the intersection of North St and Line Avenue at the blinking-light intersection. How is any traveling motorist to see the detour signs and make a route adjustment when you can barely comphrehend what and where they are pointing. As told by an unsuspecting motorist traveling thru EC to New Castle.

If some of the teachers had followed protocol in Oklahoma and Connecticut more children may have perished. The Oklahoma teachers were to assemble the kids in the hallways which were totally destroyed. Contrary to what people believe in this town, teachers I know, develop a sincere relationship with their students and would protect them at any cost. In both disasters, teachers followed their instincts and as a last resort to protect them, threw themselves on top of the students. As a parent, I couldn't ask for anything more. How many teachers have died or have been injured in just these two horrible incidents. Have teachers been trained? No training in the world can prepare you for every conceivable thing that may happen.

1) Email?? Are you serious?? If this supposed unlawful act happened and it bothers you THIS much, why don't you use those pecking little fingers to dial a PHONE? I KNOW the number is on the same site where you found the email address! Oh, yeah, you'd have to give your NAME, lol! NOW we get it!
2) And do you have any idea HOW many emails they probably receive so as not to be bringing yours up immediately?
3) If you mentioned Ellwood City, there just may be some working there who read this page and actually see that some people have nothing to do but live other people's lives and take your anonymous posts and rants for what they're worth.
I'm thinking the PHONE thing was your best bet if you need to draw attention to something ... I'm sure you can come up with a great fictitious name.

Don't take it personal. I, like others who complain about the gimme people, aren't talking about you. You work, take care of your children and have taken responsibility for yourself and the lives that you have brought to this earth. I have nothing but praise for you. We write about people who game the system. There are millions of them. They cost you, me and millions of others money, by way of taxes so they can have their free stuff. Thank you for being responsible...!!

RE: 5/22/13 (18)
Well at least you are trying to do something and I applaud that. But there are many who won't lift a finger at all. It's the ones who feel entitled to do nothing and get everything handed to them that is discouraging to the working class.

Why are you on food stamps if you work two jobs? Better yet, if you can't afford the basics, why would you have a child?
Do you even realize that you got on here to complain to the people that are BUYING YOUR FOOD. There is no money tree that the government plucks 20's from. Feeding your family takes food off the dinner table of every tax paying family in the US. With that said, if you are down on your luck due to an unfortunate event, I hope things turn around for you. However, if your life plan involves mooching tax money to pay for irresponsible decisions you've made in YOUR life, then I really don't care what brand your purse is.

The old Ewing Park School property needs to be left alone. It's a great practice field for the youth. It provides ample parking space for Festival goers. It's a nice plot of land that may be used for a variety of family oriented activities. To ruin it with a dog park, volleyball courts, bocce courts, etc. would be a shame!

5/22/13 (04)
5/21/13 (21) Just wanted to put my two cents in....the Kitchen Cabinet is a group of concerned citizens who seem to be focusing on some areas that are going to benefit the children in Ellwood City. No they don't run Ellwood City, they make suggestions to council and lets face it council needs a dramatic change. I am not part of the Kitchen Cabinet but think they are doing a wonderful job in our community. They want to install a dog park.. How does that benifit childen of Ellwood? Ok so maybe people will take their stupid dogs to the dog park instead of the ballfield.. That would save on dog bites.. Especially if my child gets bit. Ellwood doesn't have enough money for the lawsuit I'd bring but it sure would be great renaming everything after myself and my family.

To 5/21/13(01). Do you have a brain? Do you understand that the Community Plaza is part of the revitalization of DOWNTOWN Ellwood City? Do you get it? Will it ever sink in for you and the handful of other miserable people who just want to complain. And NO, the Revitalization project is not from the actions of a bunch of old people, but rather a broad-based group of people with some pride in Ellwood City from all ages. I saw the published calebdar of upcoming concerts at the Plaza. Why didn't you? You just want to check in to this site to bad mouth and then leave. If you want to watch the birds and squirrels, I am sure you can still do it in the park in the shade. How nice for you. Actually I can see them in my yard, so I am glad we have the new Plaza downtown. It has made the drive downtown much more impressive. And I think all the "old" people you make reference to are doing a great job of making other decisions helping to clean up the downtown area. Stop watching the birds and squirrels in Ewing Park one day and take a walk or drive up LAwrence Avenue. I see them in the new Community Plaza too!

5/22/13 (13)
To 5/21/13(06). I am not sure you are making sense. You say DON'T vote for old council members, then you are kind enough to share with us that you will be voting for most of the current members. Which is it? I hope you don't mean "old" as in age? Because I have worked with the "old" ones and they have tremendous dedication to Ellwood City. I hope I cancel your votes this evening when I get home and vote. Have a pleasant day.

I see that the Ellwood Police last night apprehended seven juveniles who had been looting cars and taking valuable items. What happens to them now? I hope we read next that they are LOCKED UP in a juvenile detention center. Teach the underage rubbish TOUGH lessons now or they will just be the new generation burglarizing our homes. And start publishing their names!! I am not sure what the rationale is ffor not publishing juvenile names, but it has to be outdated and not necessary anymore. Embarass them and their "parents" or "parent", if they can be embarassed.

Next time you judge someone using food stamps, I do my nails myself, my phone was a Christmas gift from my dad, my handbag is a knock off, the car I borrowed belongs to my neighbor, my son’s name brand clothes are from Goodwill, and I work two jobs. Forgive me for not looking “poor enough” for you stereotypical view of poverty. I forgot the I’m required to dress in rags in order to appease your prejudice.

Reg: 5/20/13/(5) You are so right. The money should of been used to promote the park stage. It is a perfect setting with the trees and all the space. It is so relaxing and cooling just to sit in the park and watch the birds and squirrels. What a disgrace to waste that area. But again it is the old timers making the decisions and they cannot see the forest for the trees.

5/20/13 (20) TO THE PEOPLE OF ELLWOOD CITY WE MUST GET OUT AND VOTE TUESDAY! IF WE DON'T GET RID OF THESE OLD COUNCIL MEMBERS, WE WILL END UP WITH WHAT WE GOT NOW. THEY HAD THEIR CHANCE, THEY BEEN THERE FOR MANY YEARS AND LOOK AT OUR TOWN! IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON, AND VOTE IN NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS THAT WILL REALLY DO SOMETHING! PEOPLE OF ELLWOOD, DO NOT FALL FOR THINGS THAT SHINE! SOME OF THOSE RUNNING FOR COUNCIL ARE RUNNING ON A FALSE IMAGE. COUNCIL IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THE ONCE A YEAR CRECHE. I personally will be voting for most of the present council members, plus Mr Ovial. I have three children who are eligible to vote and I am strongly suggesting they vote the same. Reporting Welfare Fraud and Abuse Benefits Recipients If you suspect someone of fraudulently applying for or receiving benefits from the commonwealth, such as SNAP or Cash Assistance, please call our Welfare Fraud TipLine at 1-800-932-0582. You may state your concern anonymously should you desire to do so and any information provided will remain confidential. Medical Assistance Fraud The vast majority of Medical Assistance (MA) providers and recipients provide and receive care within the boundaries of applicable regulations. Unfortunately, a small number of Medical Assistance recipients and providers engage in practices that are fraudulent or abuse of the Medical Assistance program. Dollars lost to such practices are then unavailable for providing care to those in need. The Department of Public Welfare is committed to eliminating all forms of fraud and abuse within the Medical Assistance program. Your help will enable us accomplish this goal. You can report suspected fraud and abuse by telephone (1-866-DPW-TIPS), U. S. Mail or email. 5/21/13 (15)
RE: 5/16/13 #3 I don't know the source of your information but here is what appears on the Pennsylvania State School Board's Association webpage. To receive full retirement benefits in Pennsylvania, teachers must complete 35 years of service or reach the age of 60 with at least 30 years of service. Teachers who complete at least one year of teaching before the age of 62 will receive partial benefits based on the numbers of years worked. Those who reach the age of 55 have the option to retire early, but will be penalized by 3 percent for every year not completed towards full retirement. The maximum penalty will not exceed 15 percent. Normally, a teacher who retires before the age of 62 and has worked 35 years will retire at 60% of their last three year's average salary. If you retire early, you will be penalized and may possibly have your retirement reduced not to exceed 15% additional. So, where did you get your information? I don't know any teacher who receives 100% of their salary at retirement.

Oh my gosh! I wasn't going to say anything but since 5/20/13 (18) did, I have to say that I bought 4 subs and ALWAYS buy Perry/Wurtemburg. But this time the bread was just wrong! And one slice of round cheese cut in half. Guess I didn't mind so much adding cheese, but hey, for me. the bread makes the sandwich. I will continue to support anyone selling subs, but I sure hope Perry doesn't use that dry, hard, crumbly bread again. We ate one and I gave the other 3 away.

5/21/13 (17)
Seriously, #21? You're saying a woman is the equivalent of a hamster? I have seen Kia Soul ads, and I have to say that while hamsters can drive and dance, I have yet to hear one talk. But I am betting that if they could, they would demand the right to vote, too. After all, if you are mature enough to appear in tv commercials, you are mature enough to vote. Perhaps you would be willing to start the petition drive for them, since I am unsure if they can write or use a computer. Hamster suffrage. Would that be a new amendment? Or, do you think we could just add some teeny tiny hamster-sized print to the 19th one that would just lump hamster's rights along with women's rights and we could be done with it? And what about gerbils? They are sort of like hamsters, only they don't do tv commercials. Do they also get to vote? Oh, why not? After all, most people who vote don't do much better with that right than a gerbil would. What was your point again?

Congratulations to the cast of Lincoln High's musical "Les Miserables" for being named one of three Best Overall Productions in this year's Mancini Awards. How do you let go of the anger? How do you trust again?" Pat Robertson's response? Robertson said "that married men have a tendency to wander and it is the spurned wife's job to focus on the positive and make sure the home is so enticing, he doesn't want to stray." And there's today's words of wisdom from America's Evangelical leader. First of all, what's wrong with that? Focus on the positive! Secondly, shouldn't you be ironing your husband's shirts instead of wasting time on the Community Forum?

RE:5/17/13 (14) Why to you hate Christians so much? Also, trying to say Pat Robertson is the leader of Evangelicals is like saying Chris Matthews is the leader of liberals. Give me a break. Not enough money for a band teacher, but what is that expensive looking structure going up in right field at the baseball field. Seems sports never have to make sacrifices in this town. Just what is that structure and what is it for. I bet I can guarantee that it will cost more in either coaching pay or upkeep, but if it is athletic related, there are no limits. The structure is a new batting cage funded by ECABF and approved to be placed on school property which will allow EC Wolverine baseball the use of it. It will eventually be covered in TURF as well...

Disappointed in the Wurtemburg Fire Hall's subs - they used to be the best in town....Since you changed the buns they are terrible. Go back to using Kimmels buns - won't buy anymore

Why does the Ellwood city school board sell the ewing park property. They need the money, and they are not in the playground business isn't that why they unloaded circle so why are they holding on to ewing park. Is it because of political conections. That live near by.

TO THE PEOPLE OF ELLWOOD CITY WE MUST GET OUT AND VOTE TUESDAY!

Attention: Gay marriage won't lead to dog marriage. When women got the right to vote, it didn't lead to hamsters voting. No court has extended the equal protection clause to salmon. And for the record, all marriages are "same sex" marriages. You get married, and everynight, it's the same sex. Case closed.
